Like Pentatone, Channel Classics is another consistently excellent label, and the discs by Rachel Podger or Pieter Wispelwey may well be the best of a very good catalogue. Just about anything by Pentatone: the Julia Fischer discs seem to be very well liked. Not sure if this ever shows up on eBay, but if it does, grab it.ĭvorak: Symphonies Nos. The yellow cover has a slightly different track listing to the other two, which are identical. Who knows But I do know that these surround sound Blu-ray audio discs deliver a music experience unlike anything most consumers have ever heard. There are three versions: a plain yellow cover with blue text a green cover with the SACD logo on it (which was part of the background to the hand-outs Philips made on SACD) and a picture of the city of Budapest. The disc was given away with early Philips SACD players, and also given away at some hi-fi/pro audio shows. The audience is made up of friends and sponsors of the orchestra, and there was a cake eating competition during one of the Strauss pieces, resulting in much sound in the hall of people moving around, all of which is faithfully captured on the M-ch recording (done by the team from Polyhymnia). The orchestra is joined by a children's choir (which enters from the rear and walks down the sides of the hall) for the Kodaly pieces, and replaces the first violinist for the Sarasate with a real Gypsy fiddle player. Everything you hear is how it was performed. Everything was recorded live on the night of Jand, since it was a one-off event, there are no edits. With an all-star lineup of artists including Stevie Wonder, Take 6, Tom Scott, Gary Burton and Plas Johnson returning for the Pink Panther, Ultimate Mancini is just that: the ultimate version of Mancini’s music, in performance, audio quality and a wonderful surround sound mix. It's a variety of pieces by Dvorak, Kodaly, Liszt, Sarasate, Okros (a cimbalom improvisation based on melodies by Bach and Liszt), Ravel and Strauss. It is a disc produced by Philips Electronics called Ivan Fischer Presents His Budapest Festival Orchestra. One of the very best M-ch classical recordings, for giving the you-are-there feeling, is sadly not available as a commerical release. Click to expand.I can only advise on SACDs, so here goes.

Users of the iPhone will also be able to share their contact information with another user in proximity through a new feature called NameDrop. The Phone app also got an update that allows users to create personalized contact posters for when they receive a call. The new iOS 17 brings smart display-like features to iPhone, which can now double as a digital clock or a digital assistant when placed horizontally.Īpple also made upgrades to its native apps iMessage, virtual keyboard and FaceTime, which gets a voicemail feature. WIDGETS FOR APPLE WATCH, OS UPGRADES, JOURNALING APPĪpple announced fresh versions of operating systems across its products. It also upgraded the more compact Mac Studio with M2 Ultra and M2 Max chipsets. The company beefed up its desktop computers, introducing a new version of its flagship Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip, starting at $6,999. Apple also lowered the price of the base 13-inch version by $100 to $1,099. Starting at $1,299, the variant comes a year after Apple upgraded the 13-inch MacBook Air with the same processor. LARGER MACBOOK AIR, POWERFUL DESKTOPSĪpple launched a 15-inch MacBook Air featuring the M2 chip and an 18-hour battery life. It features a 24-core central processing unit and delivers 20% faster performance than M1 Ultra. The chip is essentially two of Apple's largest M2 chips bonded together, a similar approach Apple took to boosting the performance of its M1 chips. REUTERS/Loren ElliottĪpple unveiled M2 Ultra, its most-powerful processor so far, that comes to its desktop computers Mac Pro and Mac Studio. The headset is powered by Apple's M2 chip and a new custom-made chip called R1, which Apple said is designed to process information from its sensors in less time than the blink of an eye.Īpple's Vision Pro headset is on display at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. It works with an external battery pack that has a two-hour capacity and connects to the device through a snap-on cable. Vision Pro sports 12 cameras and a digital crown similar to the Apple Watch to toggle between the AR and VR environments. Users can virtually project the apps onto the space around them and control interactions with the apps through eye movement, hand gestures and voice.Īpple said the device will run the Disney+ (DIS.N) streaming service, Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O) Office suite and apps from Adobe Inc (ADBE.O). The headset, that looks like ski goggles, blends virtual and augmented reality features, allowing its wearer to see digital content superimposed on their surroundings. Starting at $3,499 - three times Meta's priciest device - it will begin retailing early next year. Here are the major launches made at the event: VISION PROĪfter months of speculation, Apple finally showed off its AR headset. June 5 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) unveiled its first augmented-reality (AR) headset, as well as a series of upgrades to its devices and software, at the company's annual developers conference on Monday.Īpple's Vision Pro, pitted against Meta Platforms Inc's (META.O) Quest line and PlayStation VR from Sony Group (6758.T), marks the iPhone maker's foray into a new product category since the Apple Watch was launched nine years ago. I experienced no leaks whatsoever, throughout weeks of testing in a variety of weather conditions. The hardware offers a snug fit to your spigot and hose. Manual runs are easy to kick off through the app (or you can just press the button on the device, as noted), and detailed logging chronicles every successful and skipped run watering session. In my testing, the unit didn’t skip a beat, successfully watering at prescribed intervals and skipping days appropriately when it rained. Once your schedule is set and your hose is aimed at whatever you want to water (you can also use it with a drip irrigation system), you can largely forget about it, just like you would a standard irrigation system. Once the device is in operation, the app will log each watering session and each skipped session. Rachio’s well-designed app makes this hose timer easy to set up. The hose timer can interact with Rachio’s most basic “rain skip” feature-letting you skip that day’s watering if a preset amount of precipitation has recently occurred in your area-but it does not include the more advanced Rachio weather intelligence features, lacking options to skip watering based on wind, freeze, or soil saturation conditions. Just give the timer a name and set up a schedule: daily, weekly, or somewhere in between. If you’re familiar with Rachio’s irrigation controllers, you’ll immediately note that the hose timer offers much simpler operation, eschewing questions about soil type and shade levels, letting you quickly get down to business. Once that final step is completed, you’re ready to start watering. A similar, but slightly shorter, process is required to connect the timer to the hub, along with another firmware update that takes another 10 minutes or so. After a firmware update-which took about 10 minutes-the hub was up and running and ready for the next step. From here, you just use the Rachio app to scan a QR code printed on the device and walk through a few basic steps to make the connection to your network. The hub plugs into wall power and is ready for configuration in less than a minute. The Rachio Smart Hose Timer is powered by two AA batteries that fit into a compartment on the back of the unit. Rachio says the hub must be within 200 feet of the spigot you attach the timer to, but one hub can support up to four hose timers. You must first connect Rachio’s 2.4GHz Wi-Fi hub, which is included, to your network. Rachio’s hose timer, like Orbit’s, is outfitted with a Bluetooth radio, but unlike that device, you can’t connect your smartphone directly to the Rachio. The Rachio Smart Hose Timer ships with a Wi-Fi hub that can control additional timers on up to 4 spigots. (You’ll need a very small screwdriver to get them installed.) A single weatherproofed button on the top of the device lets you manually start and stop water flow through the device and is also used for initial setup. Two AA batteries (not included) are secreted under a hatch secured with a pair of bolts. A snug connector attaches to your water spigot, and a hose attaches to the other end. The roughly 3 x 2 x 7-inch Rachio Smart Hose Timer couldn’t be simpler. This review is part of TechHive’s in-depth coverage of the best smart sprinkler controllers. |
